Item# Bar Harbor Wooden Solar Post Cap

Since 1988, The Nantucket Post Cap Company has been creating fine post caps, finials, arbors, gates, benches, tables, and pergolas made out of the highest grade of redwood and cedar. All their high quality Solar Post Caps are made from the best grade of clear, all heart, vertical-grain Redwood or Clear Western Red Cedar, so you can choose the wood species that works best for your fencing, deck, or other landscaping project.

Both Red Cedar and Redwood have great resistance to moisture, decay and insect damage. These wood types also have exceptional dimensional stability. Your Solar Post Cap will lay flat, stay straight, retain fasteners, and provide a firm base for many types of stains and paints, giving you a post cap that will hold up to the elements for years to come.

Solar post caps are decorative structures covering the tops of wooden posts on outdoor decks and wooden fences providing ambient lighting. Not only do they enhance the outdoor wooden structure, but they protect the top of the wooden post from cracking and splintering. Post caps will also cover up any uneven mill cuts or other eyesores on top of the fence or deck post. Available for nominal post sizes of 4x4, 5x5, and 6x6.

This cap is also available in a non-lighted version, the Island Flat Post Cap.

How to choose the correct solar post cap size:

Nantucket Post Cap LogoNantucket Post Caps are sized according to the actual physical measurement of your post.  All post caps are made 1/8" larger on the opening then the actual post size you specify.  For example, if your 4x4 standard post truly measures 3-1/2" x 3-1/2", then you would choose that size and your cap would come with an inside measurement of 3-5/8" x 3-5/8".

All Nantucket Post Cap products are made in the U.S.A.

Solar Post Cap FAQ's

How bright is the solar post cap light?
The solar post cap light provides an ambient, non-task-oriented light.

Where can I purchase replacement LED light bulbs?
The LED bulbs are part of the whole solar cell component and are not designed to be replaced. The LED bulbs have an average life of 10 years, with a normal usage of 6-8 hours per day.

What kind of replacement batteries should I buy for the solar post cap light?
If the rechargeable batteries provided will no longer recharge, they can be replaced with any AA rechargeable batteries. The life depends on the quality of the batteries purchased.

How long will the rechargeable batteries provided with the solar post cap last?
The rechargeable batteries are NiCad batteries and they are rated for approximately 1000 cycles, or roughly 3 years.

Can I use regular, non-rechargeable batteries in the solar post cap light?
No, the solar post cap light is designed to be used with rechargeable batteries. If regular batteries are used in the sun, they will destroy the solar collector.

How long is the life of the LED light bulbs?
These LED's are of the highest quality and latest technology available today. With a normal usage of 6-8 hours per day, the LED bulbs should last an average of 10 years.

What is the run time on the solar light?
Run time is base on the season, and location. Northern climates will have a run time during the summer of 8-12 hours, and 2-6 hours during the winter months. Southern climates will have a run time during the summer of of 8-12 hours, and 6-8 hours during the winter months. The amount of sunlight is a direct correlation to run time - cloudy days will effect run time.

My solar light will not light up.
The most common issue is the battery. It takes up to 3 weeks for a new solar unit to cycle to full capacity. Winter months will effect this cycle time as well, if installed during the winter season. To test a solar unit, remove the NiCad batteries and install AA alkaline batteries. Cover the entire solar collector to test the unit. If the unit lights up, replace the NiCad batteries. Caution: alkaline batteries should only be used for testing and should be removed immediately after testing the unit. Do not leave alkaline batteries in the unit.

Product Care

Post Caps

All Nantucket Post Cap products are produced from the finest grade of Redwood or Western Red Cedar and sold in the natural, untreated finish.

Nantucket Post Cap wood products may be treated with a clear sealer to preserve the natural wood color while protecting them against the elements. Red Cedar and Redwood can be painted or stained as well.  Talk to your local trusted paint supply store for best procedures on treating.

A marine grade adhesive can be used to fasten wooden caps to the fence posts.
