The transformer is the heart of the your lighting system and should not be over looked.  Substituting with a cheap or poor quality transformer is not recommended.  Low grade transformers don't regulate power very well which will shorten the life of your bulbs.  Additionally, low quality systems tend to run hotter and louder, even enough to hear a "humming" sound.  Other possible problems from low grade transformers can even lead to melt downs and fire, in extreme cases.  And, on top of all of that, their life expectancy is only a few years at best.  Simply put, professional grade lighting should operate on a professional grade transformer.

Total wattage needed is determined by multiplying the number of fixtures x wattage of bulbs in fixtures.  For example, 9 lights each with (1) 7 watt bulb, would require a transformer capable of providing 63 watts.
